Wireless network card Antenna? I just installed a belkin network card in my desktop system. My desk is in the living room and we just put our couch in front of it (so my chair is sandwiched in between the desk and couch) so it kind of needs an extension.

My city offers free wireless and I have a desktop. Can I connect my desktop to this wireless network? Help!? My city offers free wireless internet from huge antennas scattered around town. The closest one is a thousand feet or so away and not line of sight. I brought in a friends laptop and was able to see the network with three out of four bars, but did not try connecting. I have heard that you may be able to see the connection, but not connect in some situations. Is that true? Should I bring his laptop back and try to connect to that network w/ it? I am planning on buying a Linksys PCI card for my desktop but it appears they have three or four models to choose from. I am not sure which one to get, or if it will even work. Here are my options: http://www.pricegrabber.com/search.php?form_keyword=linksys+pci+card&topcat_id= I was looking at : Linksys WMP54GX Wireless Network Adapter 802.11b/g, 108 Mbps, 128 Bit WEP, WPA2 and Linksys WMP300N Wireless Network Adapter Card 802.11b/g/draft n, 300Mbps, 256bit WEP, WPA Any help you can provide would be much appreciated! From what I understand the city provides 802.11 b and g compatible wifi. www.wifihermosabeach.com LOOKING FOR MORE INFO: 1) I am worried about range. Is 1000+ feet to the antenna doable? 2) Since it is so far, does a pci card provide more "power" to reach the antenna. I am pretty sure the signal can reach my computer from the source, I am just worried about getting back to the antenna from my computer 3) Will a USB work just as well and provide the same "power"? 4) Any suggestions on the best product for my situation?
Possible to increase strength of wireless network that is not my own? I will be living in an apartment for a short amount of time, and I will have access to neighbors' unsecured wireless networks. However, having been there before, I know that my laptop's internal wireless card is relatively not that great at getting strong signals (others' laptops have worked better). I am wondering if there is something I can install on my laptop that will increase the signal strength of a nearby wireless network. That is, I am looking for something that I do not need to install on the actual router that makes the signal better. Is a wireless antenna (like that listed below) what I am looking for? Or should I purchase a new wireless adapter? Thank you so much! http://www.buy.com/retail/computers/product.asp?loc=692&sku=10403540&wl=1 No, I am not stealing. I already spoke to them last time I was there, and they were ok with it. I actually watch their cat once or twice a week while I am there, so it is a good setup. I am not sure if they would be willing to install something on their router to increase the signal. Assuming they wouldn't, I have this question. Any help would be appreciated.
How do you use two wireless routers to expand the range of your wireless network? I have researched this quite a bit but the answers are somewhat elusive. No matter where I put the wireless router in our house, no matter which brand I buy, no matter how large the antennas are on the router, there are some places in the house that get very sporadic or low connections wirelessly. I have several mainstream wireless routers. Has anyone successfully enabled a connection between two routers to improve wireless reception? I also tried a range extender, and it worked, except that I ended up getting constant IP conflicts, plus the thing consistently lost its connection to the internet every night.
How do I turn on my wireless antenna on my laptop? My laptop is having troubles connecting to my wireless network. It says there are no networks in range. There is no switch on my laptop to turn on wifi, but I think I need to turn on the wireless antenna. How do I do this?
Can I improve my laptop's wireless ability by adding a USB antenna? I am lucky enough to live close to a free public wireless network, but unfortunately my signal is spotty somedays at best. My laptop has an internal wireless antenna (it's an Acer extensa, 1 year old, with Vista), but I want to improve my signal. If I were to buy a USB wireless antenna, could it enhance my reception, or would it just override the internal antenna? Are there any other ways to enhance my reception?
does motorola signal booster make wireless network faster? OK I have 2 computers. One computer is connected by wire and the other one has a linksys antenna thing that gets wireless. Will getting a Motorola signal booster increase internet speed for wireless?( would my wireless computer and laptop have faster internet if i get the booster or will it just affect the wired computer) TY!
How can I improve my home network wireless speed? My home network is using a Dlink 624 with firmware 2.76 and my remote computer is using a Belkin USB G version F5D7050. When I log onto the computer and it get on the wireless signal it shows as VERY GOOD and 56Mbps but then it drops to 18-24. I figured that it would be better than my 11Mbps antenna i had but it seems slower? Any suggestion? Oh, it's about 40 feeet from the Dlink-single level house on channel 11 with extended range mode on and Qos enabled also. Long preamble and CTS in auto. Mu internet is WAY slower with the Belkin G adaptor than it was with the B adaptor i had? Looking at 10-20 seconds to load a page campared to 1-10 with the B ? Just can't figure it out????
power requirements for a 18dbi Antenna wireless networking? I bought a 18dbi removable antenna for my usb wireless networking adapter. What is the best router for wireless networking? I want a home network which I want one computer to actually connect to the router and modem, and another computer upstairs to have wireless internet from the router via PCI wireless networking card (with antenna). I was thinking Linksys WRT54G. Any better ideas? Also, is it worth paying $10-20 more for the WRT54GL or the WRT54GS or do these routers perform just as well as the standard 54G.
Can I use a wireless router to connect to a wireless network? My neighbor who lives a couple of streets over wants to share some network resources with me. I am familiar with antenna's and everything... I just need some help with choosing a router. I have seen some outdoor routers that run linux, but they are a little pricey... Any ideas. Basically, I want to create a bridge that connects wifi to ethernet..
Help! Wireless network problems!? Alright, I have a basic knowledge of computers. I have a Belkin wireless modem/router and a Belkin usb adapter for a desktop PC. I have an office outside and the router is in the house about 4m away. The wireless signal is always at least a few bars and used to work really well. All of a sudden the wireless network has become really "fragile" for want of a better word. Look at it funny and it disconnects, the antenna icon goes red in the tray and the network icon starts searching. The only thing I have done recently is formatted the hard drive and cleaned out the PC. It's becoming really frustrating. I've also reset the router and disabled anti virus. I can't really get the antenna any closer and it was working pretty well. Any ideas? Do i need a new wireless antenna? Thanks.

Wireless network problems please help? i have a lynksys wireless-g broadband router and a e home,2 dollar.. literally, network card. the router is all the way across my house, which is brick, and my network card is in my computer (which is built by me, if it matters) on the floor. I get a signal every now and then but a very low signal, 5.5-11.0 mbps, i want to get a better signal and speed, i bought a 10 dollar gigaware 7 dBi high-gain networking antenna kit for my router, and it didn't improve anything. Just in case you were wondering i have a 2wire 2700HG-d modem which, on the other computer, shows up as having 400Mbps. Another weird thing is if i get no signal, i can restart my computer and sometimes when it comes back on, i get a signal. I want gaming speeds. Another thing is, i took my computer and moved it into the same room and booted it up and got the full 54mbps but still had a low signal. i am looking for the most cost effective way to fix this, you can post the answer or you can im me, ill be on for a while thx

Network Question: From Antenna to Wireless Router to dish reciever to router? I live out in the country. I have a tower set up to recieve a wireless signal from the city. I have a wireless router set up so that all the comps in the house can get on the net. My g-paw lives next door and the tech guys set up a dish reciever to get the signal from the router. Gpaw wants his house to have wireless too instead of plugging into the wire from the dish set up on his house. Do I use a router for that or what? There is a wire coming from the dish reciever connected to his house that is plugged intoa little box, and from that box he can directly connect to the dish. Basically I want to connect that wire to a router so that there is a strong wireless signal in his house too. Can it be done? How? Thanks everyoen for spending time with this...

Wireless network in home, need privacy, explain a proxy to me? Ok so I have a wireless network at home and the main unit that sends out the internet is on another computer. My computer has an antennae and receives the signal and logs on. I've found out a bit about proxy servers, but what are they exactly? How do they work? How are they going to keep my web browsing history on my computer only? Any help is appreciated for this befuddled person.
How far can a wireless network connection go? I have a modem that gives internet to two computers in the house that are both with in 5 or so feet. It gets good connection from being that far from the modem(not that its a long distance). But when I try and take my other computer, my laptop, into my back room. The internet goes out. What to fix about this? It is not a dual antenna router.
Can a Internet capable phone be used as a wireless antenna? Is it possible to connect to the internet on a laptop where there are no wireless networks by connecting your computer to your 3G or internet enabled phone? I have seen ways to use a laptop and connect a gaming system to the internet wirelessly by bridging connections. Is there something similar you can do with a phone?

How to determine IP address for second router? My PC is connected to the internet with a wireless network antenna card. To access the wireless router I type in 192.168.1 in my browser to get to setup options.. as usual. Now, I have a second wireless router that I have plugged my PC via ethernet that I would like to access as well but I can't figure out that IP address. Any idea on how to find access it?
Creating an External Wireless Network from your home based Internet Connection? I have a 20mbps/1mbps connection at home and I have a dlink gaming router to provide wirelss around my house. I want to be able to extend that wireless outside. I have found many high gain antennas but I am not sure how to do this. I understand setting up one high gain antenna.. I can do that right outside my balcony (I live in an apartment building). The baclony has a clear line of site for hundreds of feet (there are many tall buildings nearby). Is it possible to make one antenna connected to my network here, then lets say 400 feet away, another antenna which is powered at another location, and it can act as a repeater or range extender? In that fashion, strategically place 3-10 of similar powered antennas in the area to bounce the signal or to blanket and area. Almost like cell towers? My goal is to be able to get wireless internet/connect to my network @ home within a large area while not being home. Thanks
Connect Dish DVR 722 to home wireless network.? I have a wireless network installed in my home thru AT&T. I want to connect my dvr to it. What adapter do I need to attach to the dvr to make this happen? Can I use a simple usb "receiver antenna" or something more elaborate?
Extend Wireless Network Range with Two Routers? I'm trying to extend the range of my wireless network so that I can access it everywhere in my house. I've tried placing the router in different parts of the house to find what offers the best coverage for the whole house, and didn't find a great location that would allow a stable connection everywhere in the house (and the backyard and patio). I've also tried boosting the antenna power to 80mW in 3rd party firmwares, and tried other antennas (but still not stable since the notebooks have limited antennas). I have two routers, both Linksys WRT54G's. One is a V2 running the latest Tomato firmware (to bypass throttling with Teksavvy MLPPP), and the other is a V5 running DD-WRT micro (only 3rd party firmware that it can run). I'm looking to see if I can use WDS or repeater mode to extend my wireless range (both in opposite corners of the house probably). I'd like a solution where the transition between AP's is seamless. The routers are connected via Ethernet already with different static IP's, with DHCP enabled for the Tomato router. I've attempted to use WDS so far (I'm guessing this solution is optimal if there is no wired link between routers, but I have one), and have followed these instructions: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php...router_network With those instructions, I'm not able to connect to the DD-WRT router when in it's coverage range. Anybody have a good solution I can try with my existing hardware? I've already tried positioning the router in different places, and I don't have any other 2.4GHz wireless devices (only on the 900MHz and 5.8GHz bands). I'm not interested in Powerline networking since I'm trying to extend my wireless range... looking for a no cable solution in which my 802.11b/g devices can connect.
Distance of wireless network? My dad recently got wireless at his house and wanted to know if another building, which is his small business could be on the network also. The building is about ~2000ft away and has a tree in the line of site. Is there a special antenna or something that would boost the signal to the other building and allow him to use the network from there?
How do I best aim my router antennas? I have a Netgear wireless N router with three antennas on top. What is the best way to aim them for best wireless networking? Are they directional? If the computing is going to be all around the router, should I point them in different directions? Or should I point all three parallel in the direction where they will be most used?
xbox 360 with wireless network? I am going to be buying a 360, and I was wondering what is needed to play on xbox live? I get my internet from my apartment building, but it's wireless and I use an antenna to pick it up. I was wondering if I could connect the 360 directly to my computer with the ethernet cable, or if i need to buy a router. Thanks for any help.
Wireless network range in regards to Xbox live question? I have an Xbox on the second floor of my house and the router is on the first floor (can't move it don’t ask). I have an original Xbox network adaptor whose antenna is kind of broke that is outside of the room that the Xbox is in. I just bought an Xbox 360 wireless network adaptor and hooked it up to the Xbox (inside room) and it has less strength than the older one that was outside the door and connected by an ethernet cable. So which would be better for signal strength, the older Xbox wireless adaptor outside my door, the 360 network adaptor connected by a usb extender to be outside the door, or a pelican network adaptor outside my door. No I have an Xbox 360
My computer has no wireless networks found in range? The hardware is there in device manager and I tried uninstalling drivers and reinstalling. I tried switch new antennae and new internal wireless card. Bluetooth is working fine and wireless button is on. I think it is a software problem. Same nc6230 next to it finds five networks. System restore won't work because the adapter and computer is new and never worked. The last thing I can think of is reinstalling operating system.
Recommendation for a high-gain antenna to use for a wireless connection? Specifically, I am looking for an antenna that will connect to a standard wireless card and is rated for outdoor use. I will most likely mount it on my roof. This probably seems like a strange question, but I live in a very commercial area in a medium-sized city, and there are literally dozens of unsecured networks in range of my home, even without the extra range such an antenna would offer. I don't always get the greatest signal strength, though. I have looked around online a bit, and have found a lot of options in the $150-$200 range, but have no idea which antenna might work better than another. Had no idea that they came in so many shapes and sizes! Also, I do not have a wireless network card to which I can connect an external antenna. I am not sure if it makes a difference which card I use, as long as it has the standard mini-coax connection for the antenna. Thanks! It's ironic that one of the best answers so far also offended me quite as much as it did. Although there is no law against connecting to any unsecured wireless network, as far as I know, the one(s) I will be using are primarily businesses in the area which offer free WiFi. As I said, I live in a very commericial area. Even if they were "home" networks, though, if they are not secured at all, I am not aware of any law whatsoever which would prohibit anyone from using them. It would be like having a radio station and then trying to say that only certain people were allowed to tune it in and listen to it.
creating the strongest wireless network? I am needing help in creating a strong wireless network for a outdoor usage. There are two access points currently and they have netgear routers. Its almost useless and has little or no range. Which Amplifiers and antennas should I buy? Pricing is not an option.
Would this wireless networking plan work? We have the internet (wired) hooked up to the desktop in another bedroom. We have a router, but it is not wireless with antennae. If I bought a wireless router, would I be able to hook it up with the modem to the desktop, even though the desktop does not have any wireless device in it?
Wireless antenna with LAN Port? Hi, I am in a situation where I need a computer to be networked. It is not possible to wire the device in physically, but it is possible to network is wirelessly. The problem is, I cannot put a wireless card into the device or hook in a USB antenna. Is there a device, that can connect to a wireless network and than allow me to link that device and the computer with an RJ45 cable? Basically, tricking the computer into thinking its physically wired in? Thanks so much in advance!
