Does a higher gain (dBI) in WiFi Antennas mean better reception?

Does a higher gain (dBI) in WiFi Antennas mean better reception? I'm trying to get a signal from far away. I was thinking of buying a high gain parabolic outdoor antenna.

1. you get a wider range not neccesarily a better connection
2. When you say far away, if you mean next door or across the street, then you can make a spherical reflector out of aluminum foil and get hi gain directional reception.
