Is a laptop with built-in wifi the same as USB wifi antennas?

My Toshiba Laptop has built in WiFi that says 802.11 something? The same number that USB adapters have... =D Well I was wondering if it would be a waste to buy a usb adapter for increased or better wifi signal, if they are just the same as a built-in antenna of a latop? What would increase signal at long ranges? Thanx in advance!!!!! =D

  1. the built in one is fine if you are well within range of your wireless router. If you are on the outer edge and have a poor signal, an external adapter can help you get a better signal. otherwise they preform the same!
  2. 802.11G is still rather standard I think. If you did want to upgrade then you would be ahead to go with an 802.11N. However make sure your laptop don't already have it, Check the model number on Toshiba's website to see. I really don't think you would see much difference in putting two adaptors on your machine. Might raise problems. The only thing I could see it doing is adding redundancy, meaning if one fails, the other would take its place.
  3. I thought that I could get better wifi with an antenna for my laptop, but it was worse than my computer. Your laptop is probobly better than the 70-100$ antennas. If you are really desperate, you can buy one of those 500$ ones (which might increase your wifi), but, I would not.
